How to Wear Red Lipstick on Your Wedding Day

I’m a lover of red lipsticks, it is a classic makeup look for a reason. It’s timeless, chic and flattering for every skintone. And, I love when a bride chooses a red lip! A red lip on your wedding day can be risky, but we say, it’s bold and brave and yes, it looks stunning in the pictures. Here’s our run down on what you need to do to get wedding ready red lips.

Preperation is Key

A durable red lip requires a little prep work. Before you apply your layers of red lipstick, make sure that your lips have been exfoliated and moisturised with a good quality lip balm. Prepping the lips will ensure that your lipstick applies well, appears smooth and lasts throughout the day and into the night.

Try different reds before the wedding

If you are doing your own makeup on your wedding day, or haven’t scheduled a trial with your makeup artist, make sure you test out several formulas and undertones of reds. By formulas I mean liquid lipsticks, stains, balms, cream finishes, satin finishes, matte finishes, etc.

Red Lips don’t always have to be BOLD!

For a more subtle and natural colour you can apply some balm first, then add lipstick by patting on with your finger starting in the centre and dabbing outwards – this will create more of a stained lip look. So if the colour in the bullet looks bright, you can try it out first with 50% less punch.

Match to your own Colouring

Think about skin tone, eye colour – it all makes a difference. Bold brights look great against darker skin tones. Bluey-reds (like the classic pillar box shade) can make your teeth look whiter, while this season’s orangey-reds go great with a tan. Try them all – the right one is the one that brings your complexion to life.

Does red “vibe” with your theme and surroundings?

For your wedding you need to find a lipstick which is in keeping with your bridal makeup as well as your personal style and wedding theme; if you don’t wear red lipstick, don’t start on your wedding day.
It is important to be true to your self and choose a shade which enhances your natural beauty.

I think seasons really make a difference in the overall impact of a red lip. Autumn and Winter are when I LOVE to see the red lip in action.
