One of my favorite things about my job as a wedding planner is that no two couples are the same, which means no two weddings are the same. Each couple has a unique style and personality, and I always enjoy the challenge of finding ways to best express who they are through each little detail of the day – after all, we are celebrating them!
That being said, some couples prefer huge, elaborate celebrations for their receptions. They want to be the life of the party in an epic event their friends and family will never forget. And to that, I say, “Go for it! Let’s get this party started!” But at the same time, some couples prefer more intimate, warm receptions with a relaxed feel. They want to celebrate and reminisce with their guests in a laid-back kind of style. This post is for you!
4 Ways to Create a Cosy Reception
1. Lighting
The best way to enhance a mood is through lighting. Bright, cheerful lights give an air of energetic excitement. Minimal, dark lighting creates a romantic feel. But for a cosy atmosphere, try some tea lights, taper candles, and lots of soft, twinkling string lighting. The subtle lighting will help create the warm ambiance you’re looking for.

2. Seating
Instead of banquet tables, try incorporating some intimate lounge areas with fabric chairs, sofas, and loveseats. Arrange them in a way that encourages easy conversation. Add in a few rugs and throw pillows that fit your wedding theme, and the relaxed look is complete! Offer warm drinks like coffee, tea, and hot cocoa, and guests will feel right at home!
3. Colour
Choose a colour pallet that looks warm and inviting rather than formal or overly bright. Utilising lots of greenery or natural wood accents will provide an earthy feel. Pair it with deep, rich or muted hues. Creamy white, mustard yellow, deep green, greys, soft blues, and rich reds work well in cosy colour schemes.
4. Music
It probably goes without saying that the music you choose directly affects the tone of the reception. For a cosy feel, go with music you might hear in a coffee shop – a string quartet that recreates rock and pop songs, or maybe some indie/folk modern music.
