Cake Tasting with Malarkey Cakes

Last week, I had the pleasure of joining one of my couples at a cake tasting (cake is my favourite thing!) with Katie, Cake Designer and Owner of Malarkey Cakes.
If there’s one thing couples (and planners) look forward to about wedding planning more than anything else, it’s the wedding cake tasting. And how could you not? You get to spend an hour or two eating cake, combining cake and filling to create your perfect slice, and then make plans to eat cake yet again at your wedding. What’s not to love?

Meet Katie

I first met Katie last year, Malarkey Cakes’ style and approach are very much in line with Perfectly Planned 4 you’s brand. Katie designs cakes for people getting married in London and the South East doing things their way! Her cake style is inspired by this amazing city as well as her many travels. Modern culture, architecture interiors and graphic design are the main influences for her work.

After talking to my couple I knew what they wanted, a contemporary cake that showcased their London theme with a splash of tropical and lots of flavour. A real focal point that also complimented their reception venue, Drake & Morgan’s The Anthologist, and I couldn’t think of a cake designer better to fulfill their brief than Malarkey Cakes.

The Tasting

Prior to the tasting, Katie directs clients to her flavour menu, where they can select 4 they’d like to sample. Katie takes a lot of time perfecting her recipes and offers a large range of flavours, from ‘Sherry Triffle’ to ‘Lemon and Blueberry’ to ‘Raspberry Ripple’ to her new Jamaican inspired ‘Rum and Ginger’ cake. A cake tasting session with Malarkey Cakes costs just £25 which is then deducible from the final amount of the cake.

At the cake tasting, Katie takes time to understand the couple’s wedding day and what they are looking for and more importantly explains the wedding cake process. Cake options in terms of size, shape, serving portions and finally, she talks them through the decoration.

Advice

Before attending a cake tasting here are a few things to think about:

  1. Do you like round, square, oval or hexagon shaped cakes?
  2. Flavours?
  3. Do you like the look of buttercream or fondant?
  4. Do you want fresh flowers displayed on your cake or any other decorative elements? (I always ask my couples to create a Cake Pinterest board.)
  5. What is your cake budget?

If you are having your cake made by a pro, we recommend checking out Malarkey Cakes, for her creativity, artistic flair and superb attention to detail. Oh and her cakes taste good too.
